At JG Custom Woodworking, much of our work is custom made, and unlike some others, there are no mass-produced parts. In cases where specialty items are needed, John works with other local artisans and craftsman, relationships developed over decades, to ensure items are in harmony with the design and of the highest quality.

John Giacobbi is a master craftsman with over 45 years in the business, 30 of those spent in what he liks to call a romance with the wood. He is both an artist and historian, with in depth knowledge of his medium and where to find it. John travels all over the northeast, visiting farmhouses, barns, mill buildings, and more, historical places reaching the end of their very long tenure. Some date as far back as the 1700’s. (Although someday, John hopes to find wood that is even older.)

John salvages antique species including Pine, Red Cedar, Black Walnut, Oak, and Chestnut. Wood that would be otherwise lost to history. Years of experience and an intuitive artist’s eye allows him to know what individual pieces can create. “Let the wood tell you what it wants to be,” he says, studying and categorizing each one.

Many pieces have what some would call defects, knots, scars, and marks from previous builders. To John, this is part of their appeal, and knows how to work with, not against, these unique markings. In this way, he preserves the history of the wood, from its origins as an old-growth tree to the people who first cut and shaped it, and finally to its new found purpose, a treasured heirloom piece in your home or business.
